Wild rosemary (kapokbos) — the Karoo's hidden cash crop

By Johan Botha · 20 April 2026

We harvest wild rosemary from 40 hectares of natural veld. Sun-dry it and sell to herb buyers in Cape Town. Zero input cost — it grows wild. We get R80/kg dried, and harvest about 500kg per year. That's R40k from land that would otherwise just be grazing. If you're in the Karoo, look at what grows naturally on your farm. There might be money in it.
