Supplemental feeding in the Karoo winter

The veld goes dormant in winter and the ewes need support, especially if they're pregnant. I give 20 bales of lucerne per week to 320 ewes from June to August. At R95 per bale that's R1,900/week. Expensive, but lamb losses without it are far worse. I've tried lick blocks alone — not enough for pregnant ewes. Budget for it and order early because lucerne prices spike in July.
